Most people starting training today will finish under the 2027 rules, simply because the path takes years. Both rule sets share the same backbone but differ in the fine print: fieldwork math organized differently, one coursework pathway being phased out, and relabeled content areas. Confirm which rule set applies to your application date on bacb.com.

The short answer, in plain language
Becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, a BCBA, means meeting four requirements set by the BACB, the single national body that issues the credential. First, a qualifying degree, generally a master's degree. Second, either 315 hours of behavior-analytic coursework, or a degree from a program the BACB already recognizes as accredited, which substitutes for coursework. Third, supervised fieldwork: 2,000 hours standard, or 1,500 under a more intensive concentrated track. Fourth, a passing score on the BCBA exam.
Passing the exam does not end the relationship. To keep the credential active, a BCBA recertifies every two years by earning 32 continuing education units, including units in ethics and, for anyone who supervised trainees that cycle, in supervision (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). The rest of this page walks through each step in order, plus what changes depending on when you apply.
Certification versus license: two different things
A BCBA is a national certification, not a state license. The BACB certifies that someone has met its education, fieldwork, and examination standards, and disciplines certificants who violate its ethics code. A state license, where one exists, is a separate credential issued by a state board, and it is what a state requires before practicing independently there.
In most states that regulate the profession, the license is built on top of BCBA certification rather than replacing it, layering on requirements such as a jurisprudence exam. The BACB directs newly certified BCBAs to contact their state board before practicing, since the national credential and a state's permission to practice are not the same approval (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). See the state licensure section below.
Two rule sets, and which one applies to you
The BACB is mid-transition between two eligibility frameworks. The current rules, in the BCBA Handbook, govern anyone applying through December 31, 2026 (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). A revised framework, the 2027 BCBA Requirements, takes over for applications submitted starting January 1, 2027 (2027 BCBA Requirements). Both are published directly by the BACB. If you are already deep into fieldwork and plan to apply before the end of 2026, the current rules govern you; if you are earlier in the process, the 2027 rules are the more likely destination, since the remaining steps take time. Either way the backbone is identical: a degree, behavior-analytic content, supervised fieldwork, and the exam. Confirm which rule set applies to your own application date on bacb.com.

What changes if you start now
If you are choosing a program or starting coursework today, plan around the 2027 rules as your likely destination, using the table above as your reference. None of this is a reason to wait. Hours completed properly under either rule set count toward that rule set's requirements, and delaying only pushes your own timeline later.
The degree pathways
The current rules offer four ways into BCBA eligibility (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). Pathway 1, the accredited program route, requires a degree from a program accredited by the Association for Professional Behavior Analysts, or by the Association for Behavior Analysis International under Tier 1, 2a, or 2b. Pathway 2, the coursework route, is open to anyone with a master's degree or higher in any field who completes 315 hours of coursework, covered next. Pathway 3, faculty teaching and research, requires three cumulative years of full-time faculty work within a five-year period, five sections taught, and one peer-reviewed article. Pathway 4, postdoctoral experience, requires a doctoral degree conferred at least 10 years earlier, 10 years of postdoctoral practice, and a reduced 500 hours of fieldwork.
The 2027 rules narrow this to two pathways (2027 BCBA Requirements): an accredited or recognized program route, functionally the same as today's Pathway 1, and a coursework route carrying the same 315 hours with relabeled areas, flagged for removal in 2032. Every pathway also requires supervised fieldwork and a passing exam score, covered below.
The coursework requirement
For the coursework pathway, the requirement is 315 instructional hours across six content areas, completed at the graduate level within 10 years of the application, through an institution with a BACB-registered Pathway 2 Program Contact who attests to the coursework. Both rule sets state this independently (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed p. 8; 2027 BCBA Requirements, printed p. 3).
| Current content area | Hours |
|---|---|
| Ethics and professionalism | 45 |
| Philosophical underpinnings, concepts and principles | 90 |
| Measurement, data display and interpretation, experimental design | 45 |
| Behavior assessment | 45 |
| Behavior-change procedures, selecting and implementing interventions | 60 |
| Personnel supervision and management | 30 |
| Total | 315 |
Source: BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026.
The 2027 BCBA Requirements regroup the same total differently (2027 BCBA Requirements):
| 2027 content area | Hours |
|---|---|
| Basic principles of behavior | 45 |
| Theory and philosophy in behavior analysis | 45 |
| Research methods in behavior analysis | 45 |
| Behavior assessment and intervention (two courses) | 90 |
| Organizational behavior management | 45 |
| Ethics in behavior analysis | 45 |
| Total | 315 |

An older verified course sequence attestation stands in for the current coursework attestation only through December 31, 2026 (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). Anyone choosing an accredited program under Pathway 1, current or 2027, does not separately need this coursework table, since the accreditation itself is what the BACB relies on.
Fieldwork hours, planned out
Every pathway except the reduced postdoctoral track requires 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork standard, or 1,500 concentrated, identical under both rule sets (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026; 2027 BCBA Requirements). All fieldwork must be completed within five continuous years. What differs is how supervision and pacing around those hours is organized.
| Fieldwork variable | Standard | Concentrated |
|---|---|---|
| Total hours required | 2,000 | 1,500 |
| Supervision, current rules | 5% of hours per calendar month | 10% of hours per calendar month |
| Supervision, 2027 rules | 5% of hours per supervisory period | 7.5% of hours per supervisory period |
| Supervisor contacts per period, current rules | 4 contacts per month | 6 contacts per month |
| Hours per period, current rules | 20 to 130 hours per month | 20 to 130 hours per month |
| Hours per period, 2027 rules | 20 to 160 hours per period | 20 to 160 hours per period |
| Direct observation, current rules | 1 observation per month, no minute figure | 1 observation per month, no minute figure |
| Direct observation, 2027 rules | 60 minutes cumulative per period | 90 minutes cumulative per period |
| Individual supervision | At least 50% of supervised hours | At least 50% of supervised hours |
| Unrestricted activities | At least 60% of total hours | At least 60% of total hours |

In plain terms, the concentrated option trades a higher supervision percentage for fewer total hours, finishing fieldwork faster at the cost of more supervision time relative to the work performed. Either option must stay within its hour ceiling per period, which exists to prevent a trainee from compressing years of fieldwork into a few overloaded months with too little oversight.
How supervision actually works
Fieldwork supervisors, under both rule sets, must be an active BCBA with no current disciplinary sanctions, either certified at least one year and meeting their own ongoing supervision CEU requirement, or certified less than one year and receiving monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026; 2027 BCBA Requirements). Every supervisor must also complete an eight-hour supervision training before signing a supervision contract (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026).
At least 50% of required supervision time must be individual rather than group, and at least 60% of a trainee's total hours must go to unrestricted activities, the broader range of behavior-analytic work rather than a narrow slice of restricted tasks (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). Both guardrails carry over unchanged into the 2027 rules.
The exam
Once eligibility is approved, the final requirement is a passing score on the BCBA examination, built on the Test Content Outline, 6th edition, in effect since January 1, 2025 (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026) and unchanged under the 2027 framework (2027 BCBA Requirements). The exam is scored pass or fail, with no published numeric score.
A candidate who does not pass must wait 30 days before retaking, with a maximum of eight attempts within the two-year authorization period (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed p. 35). This page does not state application fees, exam fees, or pass rates, since those change independently of the rules covered here; confirm current fees on bacb.com.
After you pass
A newly certified BCBA may begin using the credential immediately, typically appearing in the BACB's public Certificant Registry within 48 hours (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed p. 40). Two consequences follow right away. If the new BCBA already held another BACB certification, a BCaBA or an RBT, that one expires 180 days after passing the BCBA exam or on its own expiration date, whichever comes first (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). And a BCBA in the first year of certification who wants to supervise fieldwork trainees must do so while receiving monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). If you plan to practice in a licensed state, contact that state's board first, since certification alone does not authorize practice there. See the state licensure section below.
Keeping the credential: recertification and CEUs
A BCBA recertifies every two years, earning 32 continuing education units within that cycle, including at least 4 in ethics and, for anyone who supervised an RBT, BCaBA, or trainee during the cycle, at least 3 in supervision (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed pp. 43 to 49). The application opens in the BACB portal 45 days before the recertification date and must be submitted with its fee by that date, $215 for a BCBA or $290 for a BCBA-D (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed pp. 48 to 49).
Missing the date opens a 30 day reinstatement window with a $50 late fee, after which certification goes inactive (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed pp. 48 to 49). A planned break can instead be a voluntary inactive status, up to four years for a one-time $50 fee (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed pp. 50 to 51). Beyond that, within five years of expiration, a past-certification route allows requalifying with 16 CEUs per year since expiration plus a retaken exam, issuing a new certification number and cycle (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed pp. 12 to 13). The BACB retired its separate recertification web page; these details now live in the Handbook.
One figure changes under 2027: the same 32 CEU cycle with 4 ethics CEUs, but 4 supervision CEUs rather than the current 3 (2027 BCBA Requirements, printed p. 4). For every other maintenance detail, including fees and recertification dates, the 2027 BCBA Requirements state only that all other maintenance requirements are outlined in the BCBA Handbook (2027 BCBA Requirements, printed p. 4); this page treats the Handbook's current figures as continuing to apply unless the BACB updates them.
State licensure sits on top of this
Everything above is the national BACB certification. Many states add their own license or certificate on top of it. What a specific state requires, which board issues it, and its renewal cycle, lives on that state's own licensing page, not here. Start at the licensing and credentialing hub, or open a specific state directly, for example Georgia, Illinois, or Texas, each showing a license built on top of BACB certification rather than replacing it. This page does not restate any state's numbers.
For provider owners and clinical directors
Three parts of this page matter most for hiring, not for the candidate. A BCBA certified less than one year must be receiving monthly consulting-supervisor consultation before independently supervising your trainees, so build that into assignments rather than assuming a passed exam means a BCBA is ready to supervise unsupported (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026). Any fieldwork supervisor you assign must have completed the eight-hour supervision training and must not be related to, subordinate to, employed by, or in a multiple relationship with the trainee, worth confirming directly (BCBA Handbook, updated 06/2026, printed p. 18). And credentials matter to payers independent of clinical judgment: payers and state Medicaid programs set their own credential rules for who may deliver and bill for ABA, so check each payer contract and your state's rules; the BCBA credential is commonly part of those rules, which makes tracking each clinician's recertification date an operational task, not an afterthought. None of this is legal advice; it is simply what the rules above imply for a practice's hiring and supervision structure.
Common mistakes on this path
- Assuming the two rule sets are interchangeable. They share a backbone but differ in pathway count, coursework labeling, and fieldwork pacing. Confirm which applies to your date.
- Treating national certification as a state license. BACB certification alone does not authorize practice in a licensed state.
- Letting a verified course sequence attestation lapse unused. It substitutes only through December 31, 2026.
- Overloading fieldwork hours in a single period. Both rule sets cap hours per period, to prevent under-supervised fieldwork.
- Assuming a newly certified BCBA can supervise immediately. One certified less than a year needs a consulting supervisor's monthly input first.
- Missing the recertification date. That starts a 30 day reinstatement window with a late fee.
