The BACB's 2027 BCBA requirements take effect January 1, 2027
Latest development · Verified Oct 23, 2026
BACB 2027 BCBA requirements apply from January 1, 2027; applications under the current rules must be complete by December 31, 2026
What changed
Starting with applications submitted on or after January 1, 2027, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board's revised eligibility framework, the 2027 BCBA Requirements, replaces the current BCBA Handbook rules for anyone applying from that date forward. Anyone who applies before the end of 2026 is still governed by the current rules. The two rule sets share the same backbone, a qualifying degree, behavior-analytic coursework or an accredited program, thousands of hours of supervised fieldwork, and a passing exam score, but differ in several specifics. The eligibility pathways narrow from four routes to two: the 2027 rules drop the separate faculty-teaching and postdoctoral-experience pathways, leaving only the accredited or recognized program route and the coursework route. The coursework route keeps its same 315 required hours across six content areas, but the 2027 rules regroup and relabel those areas, and flag the entire coursework pathway for removal in 2032. Fieldwork pacing changes from a calendar-month structure to a supervisory-period structure, with each period running 20 to 160 hours; within that structure, the required share of supervision rises from 5 percent of hours per period under the current rules to 7.5 percent under the 2027 rules, and the cumulative direct-observation minimum rises from 60 minutes to 90 minutes per period. On the maintenance side, the 32-CEU, two-year recertification cycle stays the same, but the mix shifts: the 2027 rules require 4 supervision CEUs instead of the current 3, alongside the unchanged 4 ethics CEUs.
The RBT credential changed earlier and on a different axis, maintenance rather than eligibility. The BACB's revised RBT requirements took effect January 1, 2026, and apply to applications and recertifications on or after that date. An RBT who recertifies in 2026 completes the Recertification Competency Assessment, and the next recertification date is two years later, so current RBTs do not recertify in 2027. The first recertification that requires 12 professional development units, called PDUs, falls in 2028 for RBTs who certified or recertified in 2026, and it is a recertification application with no competency assessment. PDUs are earned through in-service training, an authorized continuing-education provider's event, or a passed university course; ongoing supervision and fieldwork do not count toward PDUs.
Who this affects
Anyone choosing a BCBA eligibility pathway, enrolling in coursework, or starting supervised fieldwork now should plan around whichever rule set will actually govern their own application date, since the remaining steps commonly take enough time that a candidate starting today may land under the 2027 rules without intending to switch. A practice that supervises BCBA trainees needs to know which supervision percentage and observation-minute standard applies to each trainee's own supervisory period, since trainees who started under the current rules and trainees starting after January 1, 2027 can be governed by different numbers at the same organization simultaneously. Practice owners and clinical directors who supervise should also note the CEU mix change, since a BCBA whose next recertification cycle begins in 2027 or later needs 4 supervision CEUs rather than 3 if they supervised an RBT, BCaBA, or trainee that cycle. Every certified RBT is affected by the two-year cycle and the PDU requirement, since the BACB's transition rules reach anyone who certifies or recertifies on or after January 1, 2026.
What to do now
This is practical guidance, not legal, career, or exam-preparation advice. Confirm directly with the BACB which rule set, current or 2027, actually governs a specific application, since the controlling factor is the date the application itself is submitted, not the date training began. A practice with BCBA trainees in active fieldwork should map each trainee's own supervisory periods against the correct supervision percentage and observation-minute requirement for that trainee's rule set, rather than applying one standard organization-wide. Anyone supervising should plan their own next recertification cycle's CEU mix now if that cycle lands in 2027 or later, since 4 supervision CEUs is a higher bar than the current 3. Every RBT and every organization that employs RBTs should start tracking PDUs as soon as the RBT has certified or recertified in 2026, because PDUs can be earned only after that point, the first 12 are due before the 2028 recertification date, and PDUs cannot be made up retroactively during a reinstatement period. The full detail behind every figure here, including the complete pathway, coursework, fieldwork, and CEU comparison tables, lives on how to become a BCBA and how to become an RBT; this item only tracks the January 1, 2027 transition itself.
Key dates
- January 1, 2026the BACB's revised RBT requirements took effect for applications and recertifications on or after this date, including the two-year recertification cycle. RBTs who certified or recertified in 2026 reach their first 12-PDU recertification in 2028.
- January 1, 2027the 2027 BCBA Requirements become the governing framework for any BCBA application submitted on or after this date.
- Through December 31, 2026the current BCBA Handbook rules continue to govern any BCBA application submitted before the 2027 date. An RBT recertifying in 2026 completes the Recertification Competency Assessment, and the next recertification date is two years after that.
- 2032the BACB's own stated target for removing the coursework eligibility pathway from the BCBA framework entirely, leaving only the accredited or recognized program route.
This item tracks the national credentialing transition only; state-specific licensing requirements layered on top of BACB certification are covered state by state on the licensing and credentialing hub.

BACB 2027 BCBA requirements apply from January 1, 2027; applications under the current rules must be complete by December 31, 2026
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board states that revised BCBA and BCaBA certification requirements take effect January 1, 2027, and that applicants who want review under the current 2022 requirements must have a complete application, including payment and all required documents, received by December 31, 2026.
Under the 2027 BCBA requirements, an applicant uses one of two pathways: an accredited or recognized program, or coursework of 315 instructional hours in six content areas. Supervised fieldwork is 2,000 hours, or 1,500 hours under the concentrated option, and the exam is based on the BCBA Test Content Outline, 6th edition. The BACB's list of upcoming changes, updated October 16, 2026, shows Pathways 3 and 4 discontinued on January 1, 2027, and Pathway 1 as the only BCBA pathway from January 1, 2032.
