What was reported
Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that state Sen. Brian Strickland spoke outside the Georgia Capitol on October 22, 2026 about cuts to autism therapy payments. The report says he demanded that the insurers "immediately rescind any rate cuts" and end provider terminations until a network adequacy analysis is complete, and warned them, "We are watching you."
Who the demand reached
The report focuses on Amerigroup, whose 30% cut for foster children took effect September 1, 2026 (see our October 5 entry). It also says Strickland spoke about similar cuts by Peach State Health Plan and CareSource earlier this year. His demand was addressed to the providers generally, and the report does not name each plan in that demand.
What the report does not show
GPB reports no rate action or hearing scheduled by the Department of Community Health. The Department told another outlet in April that it was not involved in the rate cuts and would increase oversight; that statement predates this event and is not a response to it.
Analysis: A legislator's demand carries no legal force over a managed care plan's rates. What it does is put network adequacy on the record, and network adequacy is the lever the state has. Georgia clinics deciding whether to stay in network should watch for any Department action rather than this press event.
We will keep watching for an official Department of Community Health statement or rate action.
